After the 2008 Cape Town and the 2009 Moscow editions, both in very big cities, the former with a population of about three and a half million inhabitants and with fourteen million the latter, Offida was next to organize the biggest sports event for cyclists. A lovely little town of the Piceno area with a population of five thousand people and an important centre of handcrafted pillow lace, Offida, thanks to the official assignation by UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) on 25th January 2008, has become the smallest place in the world to host a world championship in the history of road cycling. It also won the regional leadership, as Region Marche had never hosted a cycling championship before despite having been the birthplace of important cyclists such as Michele Gismondi, Enrico Paolini, Fabio Roscioli, Rodolfo Massi and Michele Scarponi.
Many men and women athletes from all over the world took part to the 2010 junior road championship in August. Not only a kermess and a parade of great athletes, this edition was also the occasion for promoting tourism in our territory with a wide range of attractions from local culture to wine and food, from folklore to great monuments.
The organization of the Junior Road World Championship was possible thanks to the support of Offida SCA (Amateur Cycling Association), Offida Municipal Administration, The Region Marche, The Province of Ascoli Piceno, The tourist association “Riviera delle Palme” and all the local associations dealing with tourist promotion.
